The Relationship Audit High Achievers Skip

You audit your business quarterly. When did you last audit the relationship you come home to?

The one system nobody reviews

High achievers review revenue, review team performance, review goals against targets — on a schedule, without fail. The relationship carrying all of it gets reviewed never, until it’s failing loudly enough to force the conversation.

That’s backwards. The relationship is the system with the least redundancy and the highest cost of failure. It gets the least scheduled attention of anything you’re responsible for.

What “fine” is actually hiding

I’ve written before about what a relationship should actually feel like: A Relationship Should Feel Like Home. Not a project you manage, a place you land. Most high achievers have optimized their relationship down to logistics: calendars synced, bills split, conflict avoided. That’s not home. That’s a well-run office.

“Fine” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Fine is the relationship equivalent of the Sustainable Pain Zone — functional enough that neither of you calls it what it is.

Why ambitious people get this wrong specifically

Ambitious people tend to assume love is the variable that matters most, and if the love is real, the rest sorts itself out. It doesn’t. I wrote more on that here: Why Love Alone Is Not Enough for Ambitious People. The same standards-and-systems thinking that built your business has to show up here too, or the relationship runs on hope instead of design.

The audit, actually

Not a big talk. Three honest questions: Where have we stopped being specific with each other? Where are we avoiding a conversation because it’s easier this week? What would we do differently if we scheduled this the way we schedule everything else that matters?

Answer those before Q4 asks for the same amount of you at home that it asks for at work.
